We test your portable appliances to ensure they are compliant with health and safety regulations.

Portable Appliance Testing

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) checks the safety of electrical devices, whether used in the home or in a workplace.

Along with regular visual inspections, a simple test by a qualified expert can determine whether a plug-in appliance such as a photocopier or microwave is faulty and may pose a risk of electrocution. Faulty appliances can also lead to electrical fires that can spread throughout a building.

Our fully-qualified electricians are trained to the highest standards to ensure 100% compliance with current PAT regulations

Is PAT Compulsory?

In a domestic setting there is no legal requirement to have appliances tested. However, for protection and peace of mind, it's certainly advisable. Why wouldn't you do all you can to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe from harm?

In commercial premises, the law requires an employer to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger. It doesn't state how this should be done or how often! It's therefore down to an employer to carry out a full risk assessment, and then plan routine safety checks according to the designated risk. If the worst happens, the employer is then able to demonstrate that their duty of care has been taken seriously. Failure to comply with the law can have serious consequences, including fines and imprisonment.

Electrocution – What Are the Risks?

Although safety standards are stringent in the UK, preventable accidents still happen. Electrocution can cause death or injury, ranging from minor skin burns to life threatening internal organ damage. Latest official statistics show that eight people were killed by contact with electricity at work in a 12-month period. Many more were injured.

Do I need to portable appliance test (PAT) new items?

New equipment should be supplied in a safe condition and not require PAT for a year following purchase. However, a visual inspection should be carried out to ensure the item and wiring is not damaged.

What items need portable appliance testing (PAT)?

Portable appliance testing is required for any item which has a plug and is intended to be connected to a plug socket. This includes items such as computers, kettles, lamps and extension leads.
