What are the fire risks in warehouses and factories?

Every warehouse or factory, whether it's a small-scale operation or a larger concern, must be safe for employees or visitors on-site, and for members of the public living or working nearby. Sadly, hundreds of fires break out in these settings every year, putting people's lives at risk, destroying valuable stock, disrupting supply lines and causing damage to a company's reputation. Fire hazards which can be present in factories and warehouses include:

  • Flammable substances stored incorrectly
  • Smoking materials discarded carelessly
  • Faulty electrical equipment
  • Cooking equipment left unattended in kitchenettes, tea rooms or staff kitchens
  • Tradespeople using equipment such as blow lamps, gas torches or angle grinders

The importance of completing a fire safety risk assessment in factories and warehouses

The first step to eliminating risks and hazards is to ensure that they have been correctly identified. The government has produced a fire safety risk assessment guide for factories and warehouses which contains detailed information on the processes involved.

By law, a fire risk audit must be carried out on all non-domestic premises. It's the job of the company's designated 'Responsible Person' to ensure that legislation is complied with. This would usually be the employer, manager or owner of the factory or warehouse. Although risk assessments can be carried out by staff in-house, it's advisable to consult an accredited expert who has in-depth knowledge of the procedure.

Please contact the friendly team at Allsaved to discuss our fire risk assessment services. We look forward to hearing from you.
